Description
A single mountain peak rises from dense mist above a still mountain lake, on whose shore slender trees grow, while a small boat with a single figure crosses the expanse of water. Above the landscape, a short poem is inscribed in fine cursive script, lending the image an additional poetic dimension.
The combination of landscape painting and calligraphy was a popular means in Japanese art of capturing mood and the experience of nature in words. The fine, washed ink tones of the mountains stand in appealing contrast to the clear lines of the trees and the boat.
The image is painted on paper, mounted with wooden rods, and dates from the Taishô period. This atmospheric composition of mountain, water, and poetry makes the Kakemono an impressive example of classical Japanese landscape painting.
