Description
Dense fog drifts between the treetops, letting the outlines of pines and cedars emerge only as faint silhouettes – this kakemono lives entirely from its quiet, almost tangible moisture that pervades the entire composition.
Isolated green accents in the leaves break through the prevailing earth and brown tones, lending the scenery additional depth, while at the center of the image a small thatched roof can be made out beneath the trees – a hint of human life amid the wilderness. The work was created in the Taishô period on fine silk, the jikusaki ends are made of bone.
Fog-shrouded mountain landscapes are among the most demanding motifs in sansui painting, as they require great sensitivity for wash technique and restraint. For those who appreciate atmospheric, evocative landscape art, this hanging scroll is a particularly appealing choice.
