Description
In delicate ink tones, a mist-shrouded mountain peak rises above a still body of water, on whose rocky shore a small angler has settled with his rod. The reduced pictorial language of this sumi-e-style landscape painting deliberately leaves much white space, making mist and distance almost tangible and lending the composition a meditative depth.
Only a few elements, such as a gnarled tree and some rock formations at the right edge of the image, set stronger accents in the otherwise very restrained ink painting. This type of landscape depiction stands in the tradition of Chinese-influenced mountain-and-water painting, which has been highly esteemed in Japan for centuries. A signature with a red seal at the lower edge of the image indicates the artist who created it.
The work, painted on silk with wooden roller ends, dates from the Meiji period and captivates with its quiet, almost poetic atmosphere. A hanging scroll for lovers of classical, reduced ink painting.
