Description
Dating from the Edo period, this kakemono is among the older pieces of its kind: Mount Fuji rises quietly above a hill landscape shrouded in mist, while small villages nestle among the mountains at its foot, together with pines and trees. The delicate coloring, faded with age, lends the scenery a distinctive, quiet poetry.
Painted in fine hand-painting on paper, the work displays the restrained, sepia-toned palette typical of the period, in which centuries of Japanese landscape painting tradition are reflected. Birds cross the mountain slopes as small dark strokes, while the houses at the foot of Fuji are suggested with just a few brushstrokes. This warm patina is an expression of venerable age and makes the piece a true witness to its time.
The mounting in muted golden brown with a floral pattern and wooden rollers rounds off the antique character. The kakemono is delivered in a wooden box (tomobako) signed by the artist – a rare collector's item for lovers of historical Japanese art.
