Description

Between massive, green-covered rock faces, a waterfall plunges into the depths, while at the foot of the gorge, half-hidden among trees, a small mountain hut nestles against the slope.

The painter combines vivid greens in foliage and moss with the cool blues and grays of the falling water, giving the landscape an unusually vivid coloring for Japanese hanging scrolls. The composition leads the eye from the towering rocks down to the calm river in the foreground. Created in the Shôwa period on silk, the jikusaki ends are made of plastic.

Motifs of waterfalls and secluded mountain huts traditionally represent retreat and inner peace in Japanese landscape painting. This colorful kakemono is a particularly vivid example of this pictorial tradition and an appealing eye-catcher for any collector's room.
