Description
Two cranes trace their path high above a rugged mountain landscape, while below, pines cling to steep rocks and a small boat lies at anchor in the bay. A delicately rising sun bathes the scenery in warm light – a classic composition that conveys both expanse and stillness.
The landscape is painted on silk and bears the signature and seal of Eizan Kikukawa from the Meiji period. The fine glazing technique in muted tones of green and brown creates an atmospheric depth that leads the eye across several pictorial planes into the distance.
In Japan, cranes have long been regarded as a symbol of longevity and good fortune, which is why landscape depictions featuring these birds were especially prized motifs for festive occasions. The roller of this hanging scroll is fitted with fittings made of bone. With its calm, artfully constructed composition, this kakemono is an impressive example of classical Japanese landscape painting.
