Description
In warm, golden-brown silk tones, a vast mountain landscape unfolds, in which a narrow waterfall forces its way through rugged rocks, while between gnarled pines the tip of a small pagoda's roof peeks out, lending the image a touch of quiet civilization amid wild nature.
The dense, atmospheric layering of rock, water, and treetops creates an almost floating sense of depth and recalls the great tradition of Chinese-inspired mountain painting, which was taken up by numerous literati painters in Japan and developed further over generations. A calligraphic inscription with a red seal completes the composition at the upper edge of the image.
Painted on silk, fitted with wooden roller ends, and dating from the Shôwa period, this hand-painted unique work is an evocative example of classical mountain painting that appeals particularly through its warm coloring and fine brushwork and remains captivating for a long time. Such landscapes were regarded as a symbol of far-sightedness and inner calm and were gladly displayed in refined living spaces.
