Description
Rugged mountain peaks, built up in the finest ink wash, rise from dense fog in the upper part of the image, while a tranquil lake with small wooded islands spreads out below. A striking, wide-spreading pine clings to a rocky outcrop and frames the scenery with its curving branches, deliberately guiding the viewer's gaze into the far depth of the image.
Rendered entirely in monochrome ink technique, this landscape lives solely from the gradation between strong black, medium gray tones, and the bright, unpainted paper ground, which suggests banks of fog. A multi-line inscription in the upper left, accompanied by a red seal, points to a spring day as the occasion or inspiration for the work and situates the scene literarily within the Chinese-influenced tradition of scholar painting.
The painting on paper is mounted within a dark brown silk border with a narrow gold-colored inner edge and was created in the Shôwa period. With its reduced yet highly effective visual language, this landscape, Mountain Landscape with Pine by the Lake, ranks among the classic examples of suiboku painting and is especially suited to lovers of quiet, contemplative subjects.
