Description

This ink-painted hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period and depicts a narrow rocky gorge with a cascading waterfall. A gnarled pine clings to the rock face at the side, while at the lower edge of the composition a lone traveler makes his way along a narrow path – a tiny human figure amid overwhelming nature, expressing the longing for retreat and contemplation typical of literati painting.

At the upper left, a calligraphic inscription with a red seal complements the landscape and underscores the literary aspiration often underlying such literati paintings. The graduated tones of gray and brown in the ink create depth and make the waterfall seem almost audible, while the contours of the rocks are rendered with a confident, energetic brushstroke.

Mounted on paper and framed by a dark, floral-patterned silk border, this kakemono embodies the classic union of landscape, poetry, and painting. It is an evocative testament to Japanese ink art for all who appreciate contemplative depictions of nature and the quiet power of moving water.
