Description
A massive mountain range rises out of billowing morning mist, while small birds move through the air in the distance. At the lower edge of the image, dark pine silhouettes reach into the picture, providing a grounding counterpoint to the light, almost weightless mountain peaks that seem to float in the hazy white of the sky.
Using loosely applied, broad ink washes on silk, the painter achieves an almost impressionistic effect that stands in clear contrast to strictly linear landscape painting. Rather than fine detail, it is the surface that dominates, from which forms only emerge on closer inspection. The small signature and red seal at the right edge of the image place the work in the Shōwa period.
The kakemono comes in a wooden box (tomobako) signed by the artist and is mounted with brown borders and runners made of synthetic fabric. An evocative piece for anyone who appreciates reduced, atmospheric landscape painting and wishes to lend their own home a quiet sense of expanse, without relying on color or an abundance of detail.
