Description

A mighty peak rises out of dense fog, while at the foot of the rocks a small house hides among gnarled pines. At the lower edge of the picture, a lone angler sits in his boat on the still water – a tiny human detail set against an overwhelming natural backdrop.

The calligraphic inscription at the upper left complements the landscape and points to the close connection between poetry and painting in the East Asian artistic tradition. Created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989) on paper, the work displays a masterful use of negative space and ink gradations to create depth.

The jikusaki made of wood completes the classic mounting. An impressive kakemono for lovers of quiet, atmospheric mountain landscapes in Japanese painting.
