Description

Rugged rocks and gnarled pines rise out of dense fog, while below them a calmly flowing river with smoothly worn stones winds through the picture. The fine gradation of ink tones creates a palpable sense of depth and lets the landscape blur into different layers of mist.

This type of atmospheric landscape painting, in which mountains and trees emerge only suggestively from the haze, is among the classic themes of Chinese-inspired Japanese ink painting and conveys a quiet, contemplative mood.

The painting is done on paper and fitted with a roller rod with ceramic knobs; it dates from the Shôwa period. The small signature at the lower edge of the image completes the composition. This kakemono is excellently suited for lovers of quiet, nature-connected landscape painting.
