Description
In the finest ink tones, this large-format kakemono unfolds an expansive mountain landscape with rugged rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and a temple emerging between the trees, while small boats can be seen on calm water at the lower edge of the image. The handwritten verses in the upper left refer to a famous Chinese poem about a night rest at a bridge amid maple trees.
This literary reference lends an additional poetic dimension to the already impressive landscape, uniting image and poetry into an atmospheric whole, as is valued in classical East Asian painting. The subtle gradations of light and dark create a convincing sense of spatial depth.
Painted on paper, this hand-painted unique work dates from the Shôwa period. This kakemono in XXL format comes in a wooden box (tomobako) signed by the artist and, owing to its impressive size, makes for a striking eye-catcher in any collection.
