Description
A bearded scholar, lost in thought or in search of a verse – figures of poets like this one are among the classic motifs of East Asian figure painting and symbolize a life devoted to leisure and learning.
The painting exists as a Makuri, meaning unmounted on the original Honshi. This form gives collectors the freedom to have the sheet mounted individually, for instance as a Kakemono for the Tokonoma.
The folds of the robe and the distinctive expression of the face are rendered with a few confident lines, while the background is deliberately left empty, placing the figure entirely at the center.
Such depictions of scholars and poets were especially popular in Japan among educated collectors, as they embody a secluded life devoted to the mind.
