Description

One tokkuri and one matching guinomi together form this harmonious Bizen sake set, whose unglazed surface fully reveals the raw power of clay and fire. Warm red and brown tones alternate with darker, almost metallically shimmering areas that formed during the days-long wood firing through ash deposits and shifting kiln atmosphere.

Bizen is one of the six old pottery towns of Japan and deliberately forgoes any glaze in order to let the pure effect of earth and flame become visible – no piece resembles another. The compact, slightly irregular shape of both vessels underscores this handcrafted, undogmatic character. This set comes from Morioka Hiroshi and is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter. Whether for enjoying sake or as a decorative ensemble – this handcrafted unique work brings the quiet earthiness of Japanese ceramic art into any household.
