Description

A warm, deep reddish-brown forms the ground of this chawan of Odo ware, on which light-painted plum blossoms with pine and bamboo sprigs stand out – the auspicious Shōchikubai motif (pine, bamboo, plum). This appealing contrast between the rich ground color and the light decoration constitutes the special visual charm of this bowl.

Odo-yaki (尾戸焼) is a ceramic tradition from Kōchi in the former province of Tosa. The bowl was thrown on the potter's wheel, as the turned foot ring with its throwing marks shows.

This chawan is delivered in a signed wooden box; the lid bears the inscription 尾戸焼 松竹梅 茶盌 and the signature 庄次造 with a round seal. As a handcrafted unique work, it is ideally suited for preparing matcha and embodies the quiet aesthetic of wabi-sabi in a special way.
