Description
The warm, deeply browned tone of the aged paper lends this shoreline landscape a distinctive, almost tangible patina: beneath a dense canopy of treetops, a small teahouse by the water lies hidden, while further trees and a calm body of water dissolve into fine ink washes in the background. The entire composition appears as if viewed through the veil of many decades.
In the upper left is a short inscription in elegant calligraphy, accompanied by a red seal that attests to the authorship of this evidently older work. The visibly heavily patinated, shimmering gray-blue silk border with its fine craquelure cracks further underscores the venerable age of this hanging scroll, making it a particularly authentic testament to bygone times.
The landscape painting is executed on paper and dates from the Shôwa period. Motifs featuring small teahouses or pavilions by the water belong to the long tradition of Chinese-Japanese literati painting, which takes retreat and contemplation in nature as its theme. Collectors of hanging scrolls with an antique look and dense atmosphere will take particular delight in this piece.
