Description

Fiery red leaves hang heavily over a small, watchful bird holding onto a slender branch - a classic autumn motif of Japanese kachō-ga painting that celebrates the transience of the seasons in luminous colors. The vivid red tone of the foliage stands in appealing contrast to the subdued plumage of the bird.

The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Hokage Higashihara, a painter of the Shōwa period, whose work is characterized by clear forms and confident brushwork. Autumn depictions of this kind traditionally numbered among the popular motifs for decorating the tokonoma during the months of changing leaves.

Painted on silk and fitted with a roller knob made of bone, the hanging scroll is delivered together with its signed, matching wooden box. With its intense coloring, this unique work brings the mood of the Japanese autumn into the home and is a fine example of traditional hanging scroll painting.
