Description
This hand-painted kakemono on silk shows a monastery by a lake that has come to rest deep in winter. The structure of the multi-story building appears both powerful and light, as it blends harmoniously into the gently snow-covered shoreline landscape. The signature and seal are attributed to Nakamura Shunyo, whose finely set lines and controlled areas of color create a particularly balanced composition here. The scenery conveys a sense of seclusion, further supported by the soft gradations between sky, water, and snow.
The snow-covered pines in the foreground give the work a clear sense of spatial depth, while the diffuse suggestion of distant groups of trees in the background further heightens the wintry stillness. A bird above the monastery roof and the small waterfowl at the lake shore set lively accents and underscore the natural calm of this landscape. The painting technique shows a subtle mastery of light and tonal values, characteristic of traditional Japanese painting of the Showa period.
The jikusaki made of bone completes the hanging scroll with a fine, traditionally styled finish. This unique work is well suited as an impressive collector's item and appeals to lovers of Japanese art who appreciate a calm, atmospheric depiction of high craftsmanship quality.
