Description
Several small sparrows with rust-red head plumage gather among the slender, light green stalks of a bamboo shrub. Some sit attentively on a branch, while others have settled closely together among the leaves, lending the scene a lively, almost chattering atmosphere.
The fine color painting, rendered in warm green and yellow tones, relies on naturalistic detail: the speckled plumage of the birds, the delicate veining of the bamboo leaves, and the shimmering gradations of color in the stalks are executed with visible care. Bamboo and sparrows are among the most popular motifs of classical Japanese bird-and-flower painting.
Painted on silk and mounted in bold, brick-red brocade fabric with a floral pattern, with roller rods made of plastic, this kakemono dates from the Heisei period. The painter's signature and seal are found at the lower right edge of this finely executed unique work.
