Description
Beneath an old pine tree whose needles stretch far across the picture, an old man and an old woman stand together while the rising sun appears over the sea on the horizon – a scene that immediately calls to mind the famous Takasago legend, in which an elderly couple represents marital fidelity and long shared happiness.
A crane in flight above the pine and two further birds among the branches further reinforce the auspicious symbolism of the composition. The figures are drawn in fine lines, their robes accentuated with restrained tones. Created in the Shôwa period, the picture is painted on paper, and the jikusaki ends are made of wood.
Motifs from the Takasago legend were traditionally given as gifts at weddings and anniversaries, as they express wishes for a long, harmonious life together. This kakemono combines narrative depth with the craftsmanly finesse of classical Japanese painting.
