Description

A delicate, subtly colored painting shows two small yellow birds settling amid lush blue-green hydrangea blossoms. Delicate bamboo leaves and slender branches frame the scene, lending it an airy, summery lightness. The soft color transitions, the interplay of transparency and structure, and the calmly worked composition reflect the elegance of classical Nihonga painting.

In the upper left is a longer inscription, executed in flowing handwriting, accompanied by two red seals; another seal is placed at the lower right of the hanging scroll. This is a work stamped by Ikuta Tōzan, datable to the Meiji period. The painting is executed on fine silk, the jikusaki is made of bone and underscores the traditional grace of the hanging scroll.
