Description

Two ducks with iridescent blue-green plumage rest among grasses and bright red autumn berries – one attentively holding its head raised, the other with slightly spread wings, about to settle down.

The painting combines fine, naturalistic lines in the plumage with loosely rendered, sketch-like plant motifs in the background, creating an appealing interplay of precision and painterly lightness. Ducks and waterfowl are among the most popular motifs of classical kachô-ga painting and often stand for marital fidelity and domestic happiness.

Dating from the Shôwa period, this kakemono is delivered including a wooden box – a lively, harmonious nature motif for enthusiasts of traditional Japanese bird depictions.
