Description
With arm outstretched, a figure wearing a pointed straw hat and carrying a bundle over the shoulder trudges through a landscape crossed by fine lines of rain, while a single bird flies away over wooded hills. The restrained palette, held in muted brown tones, makes the weather almost palpable.
Traveling wanderers set against a rural backdrop are a popular motif in Japanese genre painting, symbolizing the transience of the journey as well as perseverance and the close bond between man and the moods of nature. The terse, seemingly dashed-off brushstrokes heighten the impression of a fleeting, atmospheric snapshot.
The Kakemono was hand-painted on paper during the Shôwa period and is fitted with wooden jikusaki. The clear pictorial composition and the confident linework suggest a painter familiar with genre scenes. As a unique work, this hanging scroll conveys a quiet, almost poetic mood of rural Japanese life.
