Description

Under a broadly spreading pine and beside a massive, darkly inked rock stands a wandering monk with a wide straw hat, holding a gold-adorned monk's staff in one hand and a prayer beads in the other. His robe of dark green and luminous white stands out clearly against the light background.

Such depictions of wandering monks refer to the Buddhist practice of pilgrimage and symbolize spiritual search, humility, and the release from worldly attachments. The combination of evergreen pine and enduring rock further underscores the themes of perseverance and inner steadfastness.

The hanging scroll was created in the Shôwa period in fine color and ink painting on paper and is fitted with a wooden mounting. The clear, calm pictorial composition and the carefully rendered details make this kakemono an evocative motif for lovers of Buddhist-inspired Japanese painting.
