Description

Between steeply rising rock walls rendered in strong ink tones, a narrow waterfall plunges almost vertically into the depths – the composition concentrates entirely on the vertical movement of the water and, through its wide, unpainted areas, leaves the viewer ample room for their own imagination. Strong, parallel brushstrokes render the direction of the water's fall, while the darkly washed rocks to the left and right of the cascade form a dramatic frame.

The painting is executed on paper and was created in the Shôwa period. The scroll mounting concludes with jikusaki ends made of wood, a plain fitting that does not diminish the powerful pictorial effect.

With its reduced, almost abstract pictorial language, this kakemono, titled "Waterfall in the Rocky Gorge", is particularly suited to lovers of classical ink painting and unfolds a quiet, meditative effect both in the tokonoma and in a minimalistically designed room.
