Description
Executed on fine paper in muted tones of gray and blue, this kakemono combines the force of a falling stream of water with the delicacy of a blue-washed maple branch that pushes into the composition from the left. The technique shifts between bold, broad brushstrokes for the plunging water and fine, controlled lines for the foliage, creating an appealing contrast between the force of nature and quiet observation.
The painting bears the signature and seal of the painter Tosei Ono and dates from the Shôwa period. The mounting is fitted with jikusaki ends made of wood, an unobtrusive, classic finish that does not overshadow the effect of the image.
A signed wooden box (tomobako) accompanies the work and confirms its provenance. Whether displayed in a traditional tokonoma or as a calm, nature-connected accent in a contemporarily furnished room – this hanging scroll conveys the meditative power of flowing water in a striking way.
