Description

With lowered head and tensed muscles, a wild boar breaks through dense driving snow, individual flakes clinging to its dark fur. The dynamic posture of the animal immediately conveys strength and determination – a motif that in Japan also stands as a zodiac animal for courage and endurance, and is gladly displayed at the turn of the year.

The artist relies on expressive, monochrome ink washes on fine washi paper, with which fur, movement, and snow flurries are vividly captured. Signature and red seal at upper right attribute the work to the Heisei period, making it a more contemporary work within a classical tradition.

Mounted with patterned silk border in gold and gray tones and rollers made of plastic, this kakemono impresses with its immediate, almost photographic dynamism. A lively motif for lovers of classical animal painting that also lends a fresh accent to modern living spaces.
