Description

A wild goose in a steep dive, its wings spread wide and its neck stretched downward, while the faintly suggested moon shines through in the background – a classic autumn motif full of movement.

The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Tanaka Koga.

The plumage is rendered in fine, graduated tones of gray, with the dark flight feathers forming an appealing contrast to the light, almost translucent belly plumage. The signs of age and use on the paper, small stains and slight abrasions, lend the sheet an additional patina that hints at its long history.

In Japanese poetry and painting, wild geese are regarded as a symbol of autumn and of longing, as their flight across the night sky has long served as a poetic image.
