Description
With fine contour lines and delicate wash, this hanging scroll depicts an elegantly dressed beauty standing beneath a flowering branch, holding an artfully painted fan in her hand. The technique of hand painting is especially evident in the flowing folds of the kimono in pink and cream tones, as well as in the carefully placed floral patterns of the fabric, which lend the figure lightness and grace.
At the lower edge of the image, small, densely painted clusters of blossoms complete the composition and anchor the figure within a blooming spring landscape. Such bijin-ga depictions are among the most popular motifs of Shôwa-period painting and celebrate the union of feminine elegance and the beauty of nature.
The painting bears the signature or seal of Tamayo Oura. Painted on silk and mounted on a roller rod of bone, this hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period. A charming collector's piece of classical Japanese figure painting.
