Description
This two-part set of Japanese hanging scrolls dates from the Meiji period and unites two complementary mood pictures: on one scroll, the full moon rises above a mist-shrouded landscape with trees and a bridge, while on the other, a small yellow bird sits singing on a flowering camellia branch, beneath which hangs a ripe fruit.
The two pictures complement each other in their pictorial language: while the moon landscape creates a quiet, nocturnal atmosphere with restrained ink wash, the colorful bird brings life and sound to the composition with its warm yellow and red blossom accents. This interplay of stillness and song is a popular compositional principle in paired hanging scrolls in Japanese painting.
Both scrolls bear the signature or seal of Masataka Shimada and are supplied with a specially signed wooden box. Painted on paper and mounted on wooden roller rods, these two hanging scrolls form a harmonious ensemble for collectors interested in paired pictorial compositions in the art of Japanese hanging scrolls.
