Description
Delicately speckled white and pink plum blossoms open on sparsely branching twigs, while a small yellow-feathered bird appears to peck at them upside down. The fine linework of the branches and the restrained coloring of the plumage attest to great painterly care and a practiced eye for nature.
The motif follows the long tradition of kachō-ga, Japanese bird-and-flower painting, in which the early-blooming plum is considered a harbinger of spring and a symbol of constancy. The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Hiroshi Matsuda, a painter of the Shōwa period, whose works are distinguished by a calm, precise power of observation.
Painted on silk and fitted with a roller knob made of bone, the hanging scroll appears especially refined and is delivered including the signed, matching wooden box. An evocative piece of traditional Japanese painting that brings freshness and quiet elegance to any room.
