Description

Within a fan-shaped field, framed by marbled brown paper, a single, powerfully sweeping character appears in deep black ink. It stands for the wish for a long life, a motif particularly popular in Japanese calligraphy and frequently given as a gift. Two red artist's seals accompany the character and lend the composition additional authenticity.

The reduced, almost floating arrangement of the fan motif on the otherwise empty surface of the hanging scroll makes the calligraphic sweep itself the true subject of the image: every brushstroke can be traced, every thickening and tapering of the line testifies to the practice and concentration of the writer. The work was created in the Shôwa period on paper, mounted on a wooden rod.

With its clear, meditative visual language, this kakemono is particularly suited for lovers of Japanese calligraphy and Zen aesthetics, but also as a meaningful gift for a milestone birthday or anniversary, where the wish for long life takes center stage.
