Description
This calligraphy was created with a confident, energetic brush stroke, its characters drawn across the paper in generous sweeps. The ink balance between bold and delicate lines reveals the hand of an accomplished writer.
The text conveys a philosophical statement – a motif typical of the Japanese calligraphy tradition that invites quiet contemplation and was often an expression of a personal outlook on life. Such kakemono were traditionally displayed in the tokonoma with the changing of the seasons or on special occasions.
The hanging scroll is executed on paper and mounted with wooden rods; it dates from the Shôwa period. It is delivered in a signed wooden box, which underscores both the ideal and material value of the piece while also offering a safe place of storage. A charming collector's item for friends of Japanese calligraphy.
