Description
"The melody of spring and the green waters bring forth the dance of the phoenix" – it is with this line from the poem "Rhymes of Spring" by the Chinese poet Yui Xin that the calligraphy of this Kakemono is concerned. The union of music, water, and the mythical phoenix creates an image full of lightness and movement, poetically celebrating the arrival of spring.
The brushwork is sweeping and dynamic, the characters seem to fairly dance across the paper, thereby visually anticipating the movement of the phoenix described in the poem. Two red seals set colorful accents at the lower edge of the image and round off the composition harmoniously.
The calligraphy is written on paper and framed by an olive-green silk mounting with a gold pattern; both Jikusaki are missing, otherwise the hanging scroll is in good condition. A poetic Kakemono for lovers of classical Chinese poetry rendered in Japanese calligraphy.
