Description

A large, brilliant orange-red solar disc sits high in the upper third of the image and dominates the entire composition. Below it, on a dark rocky cliff washed by sea spray, stand two red-crowned cranes with white plumage, black neck bands, and a red crown patch, one standing upright, the other with its head lowered.

On the left side of the image, four more cranes pass by in staggered formation, with wings spread wide and necks stretched long. Below, green-gray waves with white crests of foam break against the rock, giving the calm upper half of the image a dynamic counterpoint. The four flying birds are deliberately kept small, lending the cliff at the center additional weight.

The crane and the rising sun are among the most auspicious motifs in Japanese art altogether: the crane stands for a long life and marital fidelity, the sun for new beginnings and strength. Together they form a classic gift motif for weddings and anniversaries. Signature and red seal are placed at the lower right. Executed as a silkscreen print on silk, this hanging scroll titled Cranes on the Rock Before the Red Sun is a festive eye-catcher.
