Description

In a quiet, almost wintry atmosphere, a dark-feathered bird sits on a gnarled, sparsely leaved branch covered with the first delicate plum blossoms. The clay-colored, slightly yellowed paper reinforces the impression of age and lends the scene a warm, muted tone.

The bird's strong yellow beak and dense, dark plumage are rendered with a few confident brushstrokes, while the plum blossoms are only suggested through fine red dots and delicate white petals. This interplay of bird and early-blossoming tree is a popular motif symbolizing the transition from winter to spring.

The kakemono, painted on paper during the Taishô period, is mounted in gray-blue silk fabric and fitted with wooden roller rods. The painter's signature and red seal are found at the lower left edge of the image. A calm, carefully composed unique work of classical Japanese bird painting.
