Description

In Japanese art, the crow is regarded as a clever, sometimes mysterious bird, whose powerful silhouette settles on a branch in this hanging scroll with a few broad ink strokes. Directly below the bird hangs a ripe persimmon, its warm orange forming an appealing color contrast to the deep black of the plumage.

The combination of crow and persimmon is a classic autumn motif of Japanese ink painting, one that unites the reduced, powerful brushwork of sumi-e with a touch of color. The loose, spontaneous rendering of the feathers stands in appealing contrast to the precise, almost graphic depiction of the fruit and the leaves.

The work bears the signature or seal of Midori Kondo and is mounted on a wooden shaft. Painted on paper, this hanging scroll dates from the Meiji period. An expressive collector's piece for lovers of reduced, powerful ink painting with an autumnal theme.
