Description

A finely painted dragonfly hovers over delicate pink field pinks, its translucent wings suggested with the finest of brushes – a motif that has accompanied Japanese summer painting for centuries. Above the scene, a handwritten poem in fine calligraphy has also been added, lending the image a literary dimension.

The composition combines precision and lightness: while the dragonfly is painted with naturalistic attention to detail, the flowering branches remain loose and sketch-like, creating an appealing interplay between accuracy and painterly freedom. The work bears the signature and seal of Kazuyo Okutani.

Dating from the Shôwa period, this kakemono is delivered with its own signed wooden box, making Dragonfly and Field Pinks a particularly lovingly composed collector's piece for enthusiasts of classical kachô-ga painting.
