Description

This Enso appears calm and self-contained, its circular form created with an even, almost floating stroke of the brush. The application of ink shifts between rich black and light, almost translucent areas, so that the single movement of the brush remains traceable across the entire surface – testimony to a concentrated, meditative painting practice.

As one of the most important symbols of Zen Buddhism, the Enso points to the emptiness from which everything simultaneously arises, as well as to the transience and perfection of the moment. In the tradition of Zen calligraphy, painting an Enso is considered less an artistic exercise than a spiritual practice, in which the inner state of the painter is directly reflected in the image.

The work is signed and sealed by Muneyoshi Hazama. Simply mounted, the piece leaves the circle the greatest possible space and is suited as a quiet, powerful accent for minimalistically designed rooms or as a gift for special, contemplative occasions.
