Description

With outstretched wings, a wild goose glides diagonally through the pictorial space, its neck lowered, its orange-red feet already angled for landing. The artist built up the plumage with a few confident brushstrokes in gray and brown tones, capturing the dynamism of flight impressively. Below the goose appears a gnarled branch with red-tinted autumn foliage, hinting at the season and giving the composition a calm counterpoint to the bird's movement.

The wild goose is among the popular motifs of autumn in Japanese painting: as a migratory bird, it stands for departure, expanse, and the change of seasons. The Kakemono was painted in the Shôwa period on fine silk, which lends the image a warm, slightly patinated tone. The picture support is mounted on wood in the classical manner.

The hanging scroll is excellently suited both for collectors of traditional Japanese bird painting and for anyone who wishes to lend their home a touch of Far Eastern tranquility with an atmospheric nature motif. The combination of lively movement and autumnal stillness makes this work a versatile eye-catcher.
