Description
With a round body and a luminous eye, a Gilthead Sea Bream appears to swim through the empty pictorial space of this kakemono, painted in warm ochre and brown tones that lend the fish an almost metallic scale structure. The fine, densely set lines of the dorsal fin and scales attest to precise observation of nature and confident brushwork.
Fish such as the Gilthead Sea Bream, known in Japan as tai, are traditionally regarded as bringers of good fortune and symbols of celebration and prosperity, since its Japanese name sounds similar to the word for "happy." Accordingly, depictions of this kind are popular for festive occasions or as a benevolent gesture toward the recipient of a gift.
The sheet bears the signature and seal of Ichigaku Hatano and is kept in a specially made wooden box. With its clear, almost graphic pictorial language and its friendly symbolism, this kakemono is an original addition for collectors of Japanese animal painting or a meaningful gift for a festive occasion.
