Description
This impressive hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period and depicts, with few but powerful ink strokes, an old, gnarled plum branch before a delicately suggested moon. The tree winds through the composition in dramatic curves, its branches bearing only scattered open blossoms, which further heightens the impression of age and tenacious vitality.
This reduced, calligraphic style of painting stands in the tradition of Suibokuga ink painting, in which the force of a single brushstroke determines light and shadow, proximity and distance. The contrast between the light background and the dark, energy-laden branches makes the work an impressive example of this art form.
The painting bears the signature and seal of Kano Yoshinobu and is delivered including a separately signed wooden box. Painted on silk, the painting rests on a roller rod made of bone. An expressive hanging scroll for collectors who appreciate the reduced formal language of classical ink painting.
