Description

On plain paper, the complete text of the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyo) unfolds here in fine, even Kaisho script – column by column, down to the concluding signature and the red seal of the calligrapher. The restrained, unpretentious design leaves the concentration entirely on the text and its meaning.

The Heart Sutra is one of the most-copied texts of Mahayana Buddhism and is still hand-copied in Japan today as a practice in mindfulness. The slender, clear line work of this piece from the Shôwa period (1926–1989) makes it a quiet, meditative wall object.

This kakemono is delivered without a wood box and, thanks to its unobtrusive design, is especially well suited to a calm, focused living space.
