Description

Between wooded steep slopes, a powerful waterfall plunges into the depths, while an extensive temple complex with red-roofed buildings stretches along the mountain path on the rocky outcrops. The inscription "Hôraisan" at the lower edge of the image refers to the legendary mountain of the immortals from East Asian mythology, regarded as a place of longing for eternal happiness.

The finely detailed, careful brushwork in tones of green, blue, and gold creates a dense, almost overflowing natural setting in which pines, clouds, and buildings interlock harmoniously. Painted on silk, the work was created in the Shôwa period and shows the fondness for detail in landscape painting typical of this era.

The hanging scroll has knob ends made of bone and is delivered with a signed wooden box documenting the authenticity and provenance of the piece. An appealing choice for lovers of traditional Japanese landscape art.
