Description
Three small birds with reddish-tinted cheeks have settled on a gnarled, winter-bare branch – a quiet image that the title "Kalter Himmel" aptly captures. The sparse composition, held in muted brown tones, leaves ample room for the unfilled picture ground, which makes the coolness and clarity of a winter day palpable.
Particularly noteworthy is the format of this kakemono: it is exceptionally wide, which lends additional emphasis to the wintry expanse of the motif and gives the hanging scroll a rare, distinctive pictorial effect seldom found among the usual, rather narrow kakemono formats. Those acquiring the piece should therefore pay particular attention to the dimensions.
The work bears the signature and seal of Hosen Higashihara and is executed on silk. With its reduced, tranquil pictorial language and its unusual wide format, this kakemono is especially suited to rooms where a horizontal picture axis is desired, for instance above a low piece of furniture.
