Description
A single character fills almost the entire picture surface of this unusually dynamic hanging scroll. The brushwork is extraordinarily free: thick, dripping strokes stand next to sweeping loops that trail across the lower third of the image almost like a signature, so that the writing itself becomes an abstract pictorial motif.
The character means "long life" and is traditionally used in Japan for birthdays, anniversaries, and other congratulatory occasions. A red seal reading "good mood" accompanies the calligraphy in the upper right and underscores the festive, positive character of the work.
The paper support is mounted in warm, golden-brown fabric, and the roller rods are made of plastic. Created in the Shôwa period, this hanging scroll combines calligraphic mastery with an almost modern, expressive visual language and is excellently suited as a congratulatory gift or as a standalone art object.
