Description

With a raised fist and a determined gaze, the young hero appears in armor, accompanied by a monkey and a dog and a fluttering standard bearing the inscription "Nippon Ichi" – "Japan's number one." This depiction recalls the famous folk legend of Momotarō, the Peach Boy, who set out together with his animal companions to vanquish demons.

The figure is rendered with a loose, humorous brushstroke, which lends the scene a warm, almost affectionate note despite its martial theme. Created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989) on paper, the work reflects the popularity of Japanese folk tales as a pictorial motif.

The jikusaki made of wood completes the classic mounting of this hanging scroll. A narrative, humorous kakemono, ideally suited for lovers of Japanese legends and folk pictorial art.
