Description
This mountain landscape, finely painted on silk, dates from the Shôwa period and leads the viewer from a distant, mist-shrouded peak across wooded hills down to a shore where two small figures of anglers are seated. The calligraphic inscription at the upper edge of the picture adds a literary dimension to the composition, as is often found in Chinese-influenced sansui painting.
The artist works with fine washes in gray and brown tones that lend atmospheric density to the mist between the mountain ranges, while pines and rocky outcrops are accentuated with brief, deliberate brushstrokes. At the lower right, the painting bears the artist's signature and red seal. The jikusaki ends are made of bone, the honshi of silk.
Motifs such as this one, which celebrate retreat into nature and the simple life by the water, are among the classic themes of East Asian literati painting. The hanging scroll "Mountain Landscape with Anglers" is well suited to lovers of traditional landscape art who appreciate a calm, harmonious composition.
