Description
Above rugged, pine-covered rocks, a pale red morning sun stands in the sky, while further mountain ranges dissolve in cool blue-gray behind a veil of haze. A chain of white cranes moves through the picture, connecting the upper, mist-shrouded mountain world with a small pavilion visible in the lower part of the image.
In Japan, cranes have long been regarded as messengers of good fortune and long life, and their flight through the still mountain air lends this landscape a solemn, almost narrative quality. Delicate accents of color in green and blue stand out discreetly against the earthy ochre tones of the rocks and pines.
The hanging scroll, painted on silk, is mounted in blue-green patterned brocade fabric and fitted with roller rods made of bone. The painter's signature and red seal are found in the lower left margin of the image. As a carefully composed unique work, this hanging scroll combines landscape painting with the classical symbolism of Japanese motifs of good fortune.
